Career Opportunities

Graduates of the information management program (IM) are innovative technical problem solvers and effective managers of human capital. They possess a broad range of knowledge in such areas as information systems, distributed computing, telecommunications and network management, and data administration. In addition, they possess skills in essential managerial areasmotivation, project management, and instructional strategies.

Because our program emphasizes experiential learning, students are well-prepared to enter the workforce as IT professionals. They often are able to network with prospective employers during internships or research projects and land their first job offer before graduating.

According to a recent survey, 75 percent of our students had full-time jobs and 7 percent enrolled in higher education programs at graduation. Our graduates earn an average starting salary of $67,000. Information professionals saw the highest jump (7.5 percent) in starting salaries and are among the fastest growing jobs (Fortune, March 21, 2005, and CNNMoney.com, September 26, 2006).

Because of the broad nature of the program, IM graduates feel at home in a variety of industries, including consulting, security management, technology risk management, information assurance, IT auditing, and others. They may choose to work for corporations, non-profit organizations, or the federal government. Often, they aspire to the rank of chief information officer (CIO) or chief knowledge officer (CKO) within their organizations.
