Social Networking through the MSLIS program
Given that our students and alumni are all over the world, we use various online platforms to communicate. We continue to experiment with social networking tools to see what is most useful for the program.
Much of the networking goes on through our
Learning Management System, which is restricted to current students. There are several resources open to anyone interested:
MSLIS Wiki
The MSLIS Wiki is at
http://istwikis.syr.edu/mslis. It’s got several useful resources, namely:
- A student-to-student guide with questions asked and answered by students
- A list of useful resources compiled by students with MSLIS blogs and podcasts as well as job resources
- The MSLIS Policies, which contains minutes from the MSLIS faculty committee meeting and a topical discussion of policies
- An MSLIS Advising Guide designed to help students select classes
MSLIS Blogs
The MSLIS blog lives at
http://blogs.iis.syr.edu/mslis/. It contains announcements about student opportunities, faculty activities, and other things that may be of interest to students and LIS alumni still wanting to stay connected to SU. On the right-hand menu, there is an option to get new blog posts by mail or to get an RSS feed.
There is also a mashup feed with a number of blogs from people associated with the school, such as faculty members, students, and alums. This mashup RSS feed is at
Yahoo Pipes
MSLIS Facebook groups
There is an MSLIS Facebook group at
http://syr.facebook.com/group.php?gid=3383277574, which it is a good way to find other MSLIS students who are on Facebook. There is a
Facebook group for the iSchool as well. There is a more informal Facebook group started by students called the LIS Social Club, which can be found at
http://syr.facebook.com/group.php?gid=33784898474
Faculty Twitterers
Some of the faculty who are engaged with the LIS program are also active on Twitter. These include:
Scott Nicholson - snicholson
Jill Hurst-Wahl - jill_hw
R. David Lankes - rdlankes
