CAS in Digital Libraries: Curriculum

The Certificate of Advanced Studies in Digital Libraries requires the completion of 18 credits. The curriculum consists of two elements:

  1. Core Courses: The certificate core courses cover the basics of creating and managing digital libraries.
  2. Electives: The electives allow students to focus their digital library studies in the area(s) that are best related to their career plans.

All courses are three credits unless specified otherwise.

I. Core Courses: 9 credits

Students must complete the following courses:

IST 676: Digital Libraries
Provides a broad overview of digital library projects and issues including representation of information in digital libraries, mechanisms for retrieval, digital intermediation, and the sociopolitical environment for digital libraries. (Prerequisite for IST 759)
 
IST 677: Creating, Managing, and Preserving Digital Assets
Provides an examination of issues and trends involved in transferring analog and paper-based collections (including manuscripts, photographs, videos, and films) into digital collections. Topics to be covered include project management, digitization, delivery systems, digital assets management, metadata, digital rights, and digital permanence. (Prerequisite for IST 759)
 
IST 759: Planning and Designing Digital Library Services
Development, design, and planning of digital library services. The course provides intensive hands-on instruction on Internet information services and their development and management for students of all levels of technology skills.



II. Electives: 9 credits

Students may choose from the following recommended online or campus courses, or from approved courses offered during Summer Institute. Other IST courses may also be used as certificate electives with the consent of the Digital Libraries Program Director.
