CAS in Digital Libraries: Admission

    

The programs challenging and flexible curriculum balances the managerial and technical issues facing librarians and information professionals in all realms of the digital world. A library background is not a prerequisite for applying to this certificate program, although prior exposure to library work is desirable. A bachelors degree is the primary requirement.

Application Requirements for the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Digital Libraries:

An application to the certificate program must include the following:

  • a completed graduate application either online or the paper form
  • a statement of your general academic plans (approximately 500 words)
  • one letter of recommendation attesting to your academic ability for graduate work
  • a current resume
  • one official copy of your undergraduate transcript
  • a $75 application fee, if not currently a matriculated student or have not already submitted a graduate degree application
  • if you intend to complete any part of the certificate coursework in the distance learning format, please include with the above requirements a response to the following question: What personal experiences and achievements have you had that are related to your interest in, and ability to succeed in, a distance learning program?
  • the TOEFL exam is required for non-U.S. citizens

Students Applying to a Masters Degree Program in the School of Information Studies and the Digital Libraries Certificate:

Students who are applying to the Syracuse University Master of Science in Library and Information Science program can also apply to the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Digital Libraries. Both the degree and the certificate can be earned with a minimum of 39 credits; however, this will require careful planning to ensure that all the certificate courses are taken. Students who intend to earn both the degree and the certificate will need to first apply to the Master of Science in Library and Information Science program. Once accepted into this program, students are to complete the Graduate School Internal Admission Application (request form at Master of Science in Library and Information Science program can also apply to the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Digital Libraries. Both the degree and the certificate can be earned with a minimum of 39 credits; however, this will require careful planning to ensure that all the certificate courses are taken. Students who intend to earn both the degree and the certificate will need to first apply to the Master of Science in Library and Information Science program. After admission to the Master of Science in Library and Information Science program, admittance to the certificate program is routine.

The Digital Libraries certificate can also be earned in conjunction with the masters degree in Information Management or Telecommunications and Network Management.

Students Currently Enrolled in a Masters Program in the School of Information Studies:

Students currently enrolled in a masters program or recent graduates (within one year of graduation) of the School of Information Studies who would like to add the Digital Libraries certificate to their degree should complete the Graduate School Internal Admission Application (request form at ischool@syr.edu). In addition to the internal application, students must also provide a statement of academic plans and submit one letter of recommendation. It is not necessary to submit a transcript or to pay the application fee. Recent graduates with a master's degree from the School of Information Studies who have already taken courses eligible for the Digital Libraries certificate will not have to repeat these courses and may credit them to the certificate.

Current Syracuse University Students or Recent Graduates:

Current graduate students enrolled at other schools and colleges of Syracuse University or graduates of Syracuse University who completed their master's degree within the last year may apply to the Certificate of Advanced Studies in Digital Libraries by submitting a completed Graduate School Internal Admission Application (request form at ischool@syr.edu). In addition to the internal application, students must also provide a statement of academic plans and submit one letter of recommendation. It is not necessary to submit a transcript or to pay the application fee.
