Career Opportunities

Recipients of the Certificate of Advanced Study in Digital Libraries are uniquely prepared for the planning, creation, and management of digital information repositories and services, either within or outside of established libraries. Digital librarians graduate from the certificate program with knowledge of digital library theories and technologies, hands-on experience in with digital libraries through class projects and internships, and an understanding of emerging trends in digital libraries from social, political, and cultural perspectives.
 
The certificate program prepares students for careers as:
  • Digital Branch Managers
  • Cyber-Infrastructure Librarians
  • Digital Initiatives Librarians
  • Metadata Librarians
  • Taxonomists
  • Web Services Librarians
Job duties may include:
  • Building and maintaining taxonomies and ontologies
  • Creating Web-based resources and tools
  • Developing highly usable library web sites
  • Leading digital curation efforts for an institution
  • Investigating new ways to retrieve and make available relevant information from outside traditional library resources
  • Keeping current with the latest information technologies, including wikis, information portals, and XML
  • Overseeing the process of digitization of various types of materials including print, slides, photographs, maps, scores, recorded music, and others
  • Designing and maintaining metadata standards and schemas and applying these standards and schema to generate and manage descriptive, technical, and administrative metadata records and repositories
  • Teaching classes in computer and digital literacy skills

Team projects and group oriented class work are common in many iSchool courses. As a result, many students find themselves more engaged in course topics, while at the same time developing and fine tuning their collaboration skills which are an essential asset in modern information technology environments.
