Curriculum

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

The following are required of all students:

Course Credits

A minimum of 78 credits is required. Of these, 60 are in graduate-level coursework and the remaining 18 are dissertation credits. Coursework must include at least four research and four teaching practica. Up to 30 credits of graduate coursework can be transferred, leaving 30 credits that must be done while in residence at Syracuse.

Breadth of Knowledge

A student must demonstrate a mastery of the theories and research in their chosen area of study.

Research Ability

Through the research practica and other research experiences, a student must demonstrate skill and judgment in the practice of research.

Doctoral Dissertation

Each student must prepare and defend a dissertation.

While it is possible for motivated and well-prepared students to finish the program in four years, most students take five years and a few take longer. Students typically spend two years on coursework and the remaining time developing and defending a dissertation. Students must be in residence during coursework and are strongly encouraged to remain in residence until they defend. Part-time studies are not an option.

This scholarship program was launched this year to recognize excellence in incoming applicants and to encourage them to participate in and lead the graduate student organizations and other initiatives within the school.

Originally built in 1955 to house the College of Engineering, renovations began in summer 2003 to completely overhaul the building to suit the techie and collaborative needs of the iSchool.
