Residencies

I enjoyed the campus residency stay mainly because you get a sense of what Syracuse is, and you develop this certain sense of pride that's associated with Syracuse that, from a distance education program, you don't often get.

The residencies are important to the success of the programs for a number of reasons, including:

  • students are trained on the technology that will allow them to complete their courses over the Internet
  • students complete activities that are easier to accomplish face-to-face (e.g., hands-on labs, group activities etc.)
  • students meet and bond with their cohort group
  • students network with each other and faculty members
  • students are exposed to the atmosphere of the school
  • students familiarize themselves with the University and the Syracuse area

Distance learning students begin their first year in July with a 8-day required residency in Syracuse. During this time, students are oriented to the degree program and the school, as well as complete the introductory courses for the degree. Some programs have additional residency requirements.

Please note that all course residencies are mandatory. We strongly recommend that students consider their schedules before registering for a class which requires a residency.  If students are unable to attend a residency they must drop the class.  As well, students can expect classes to begin with the start of the required residency or the start of classes-- whichever comes first.  Information on pre-residency assignments is posted in advance within the Distance Education LMS site.  Assignments may include readings, written work, and participation on LMS for the class. Most residencies take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the scheduled dates, however, please check the specific requirements for each course in which you enroll

For more information about the specific requirements for each program, please review the programs distance learning website:
  • Master of Science in Library and Information Science
  • Master of Science in Library and Information Science, School Media Specialization
  • Master of Science in Information Management
  • Master of Science in Telecommunications and Network Management
  • Certificate of Advanced Studies in Information Systems and Telecommunications Management
  • Certificate of Advanced Studies in Information Security Management
  • Certificate of Advanced Studies in School Media
  • Certificate of Advanced Studies in Digital Libraries
The introductory residency is held during the school's Helen Benning Regnier Summer Institute on Leadership and Change in an Information Society. Summer Institute courses meet daily for two, five, or seven days. Students may pick electives during the Summer Institute based on their schedules and interests. We do not recommend new distance learning students taking additional Summer Institute coursework their first summer. We recommend that all students avoid a heavy course load during the summer.

Accommodations

During the summer semester, housing is available in Syracuse University residence halls. Students can stay in single or double rooms equipped with a microwave and refrigerator. Meal plans are not provided during the summer sessions, although dining halls and restaurants are within walking distance of campus.

During the fall and spring semesters, discounted rates are available at hotels located within walking distance of the University.

Summer housing on campus costs approximately $100-150 per week. Housing in local hotels for fall and spring semester residencies costs approximately $60-130 per night. Students should also consider the cost of textbooks, computer, Internet, and travel expenses.

The Syracuse University Art Collections houses its nearly 45,000 objects in a temperature and humidity controlled area of Sims Hall, adjacent to the Lowe Art Gallery, but many other works, including the Sacco & Vanzetti mosaic by Ben Shahn, decorate the outdoor spaces on the campus.
The City of Syracuse has a vibrant cultural scene, with dozens of festivals and scores of restaurants encircling urban hubs like the scenic Clinton Square.
