Don Marchand

Don Marchand is a professor of strategy execution and information management at the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland. He has been at IMD since 1994, has directed executive development programs for several high-profile companies, and has taught in more than 90 public and private programs. He has authored more than 10 books, 150 articles, 50 cases and teaching notes, and has created videos about a diverse range of companies. In late 2000, as a spin-off of IMD research, Marchand co-founded a Swiss-based company, enterpriseIQ®, (www.enterpriseIQ.com) as the first business analytics company to develop scientifically based metrics for measuring how effectively a company manages and uses knowledge, information, people, and technology in its business. Dr. Marchand has been in the unique position of taking his ideas from research directly to management practice. Marchand served as dean of Syracuse’s iSchool from 1987 to 1994. Among his many accomplishments as dean were the expansion of the student body population, and the establishment of both the undergraduate degree program and the iSchool’s first distance learning program.

Before becoming dean of the iSchool, Marchand was an internationally recognized researcher, teacher, and consultant on information policy and technology management in the public and private sectors in the United States. He was an advisor to the White House, U.S. Congress, and numerous federal, state, and local government agencies. He founded and directed the Institute for Information Management, Technology, and Policy in the College of Business at the University of South Carolina. His 1986 co-authored book, INFOTRENDS: Profiting from Your Information Resources, established him as an international expert and popular speaker on the centrality of information management and technology to the competitive strategies of industries, companies and managers.

Marchand earned a Ph.D. and an MA from UCLA and a BA from the University of California at Berkeley. His stepson, Joseph Todd Ferillo, graduated with a BS degree from the iSchool in 1994 and has worked as a Talent Manager for IBM in the Boston area since 1997. Dr. Marchand became a member of the iSchool Board in May 2008.
